Association for Social Studies Educators and Teachers

Social Studies

The definition of Social Studies takes many forms and is often compromised to suit the teaching needs determined by the educational system within a country. This is especially true in our case where the definition of this most vital subject has been reduced, at best, to comprise of geography, history and civics. Compounding the problem of limited scope is the fact that the last decade has seen a marked decline in the level of importance accorded to this subject by our educational system and in particular by the parents and (thus) students.

Social Studies, we believe, encompasses a much wider scope than what is traditionally taught in Pakistan. Professor Dean M. Krey in her paper "Operationalzing the Thematic Strands of Social Studies for Young Learners" lists the components of social studies as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences, including environment.

Serious interventions are required to broaden the scope of Social Studies curriculum in Pakistan and sincere efforts are needed to strengthen its teaching if Pakistan is to move ahead as an informed nation of socially aware and responsible people.

In Pakistan, the teachers of Social Studies of the government and non-government sectors rarely find the opportunity or the time to share concerns and challenges faced by them or colleagues related to their key role of building social and community awareness amongst students from all walks of life.

Those amongst us that attempt this task do not easily find a central repository of knowledge and development experiences in this field to support any ambition in this direction.

Thus feeling the need to sensitise society at large towards the need to produce socially aware and responsible young adults, ASSET aims to highlight the importance of achieving excellence in the vital field of Social Studies through strengthening the educationists and by introducing participatory teaching models that renew interest and fully engage students.

To meet this challenge, the founding members of the Association mobilized a core team of educators, teachers and active parents to form a professional organization that can provide the teachers of Social Studies in Pakistan a platform to be used for the development of education in this field in particular and education in general.

Accordingly, on March 20, 1999, a professional association named the Association for Social Studies Educators and Teachers (ASSET) was established with the following objectives.

Aims and Objectives of the Association

1.               To offer a platform enabling the teachers of Social Studies to enhance their content and pedagogical content knowledge.

2.               To share professional experiences and challenges related to their pivotal role in society.

3.               To develop human and other resources required for the promotion of Social Studies as an area of study and practices that can contribute towards the development of education in society.

4.               To help the teachers of Social Studies in mobilizing resources for their professional development in all areas encompassed by Social Studies.

5.               To provide professional support to teachers of Social Studies for creating a knowledgebase, educational aids and reference material that can help them develop coherent policies and programmes for their schools/institutions and organisations.

6.               To extend professional support to teachers of Social Studies within the country (and abroad when possible) for developing participatory action learning programmes and research project(s) in this branch of learning.

7.               To organize regional / national or international conferences / seminars / workshops etc. on the issues of Social Studies and their implications for educational development.

8.               To establish communication with the teachers of Social Studies for sharing information through professional development activities and events.

Activities

In pursuit of the above objectives the Association organises and effects teacher training through participatory workshops, informative seminars, pertinent field tours and awareness campaigns.  ASSET continually strives to produce teaching aids and material that are shared with members and is available to institutions for a nominal fee.

ASSET undertakes action research to investigate and evaluate social studies canvasses and curriculum in Pakistan. This research is then put forward through policy influencing reports and publications.

All these activities are steered by an elected Executive Committee that is supported by the Professional Teacher Association Network (PTAN).

Eligibility for membership

Membership of the Association is open to every adult of either sex, having the following qualification (s):

·                                                                                                                                    He/She is a contributing member of society from any walk of life. This criterion allows ASSET to enrich its membership with people that make a difference and that can help strengthen the teaching base of Social Studies in Pakistan.
