Teachers’ Guide

By Harcharan Pardhan

Background

For the period September 1993- September 1995 in my capacity as a Science and Math consultant, for Aga Khan Education Services Pakistan (AKES,P), I worked with a team of master trainers (AKES,P) to facilitate and support their efforts in curriculum material development and implementation. The overall intent of this assignment was to enhance the capacity of the master trainers through pedagogical repertoire; understanding of specific subject matter knowledge; and competency and confidence in English language as a medium of instruction.

During the period in collaboration with the Science Master Trainers and my co-editor (Farah, S. Kamal) nine Teachers’ Guides on the topics (or strands) of matter, light and sound were developed. These topics were identified by the systems school teachers (classes I-VIII) to be difficult and needing support materials besides the text books the ‘only’ resource commonly used at schools.

The systems school teachers were involved in preparing, field testing, implementing, and modifying these resource materials. The teachers found the materials to be relevant, appropriate and teacher friendly. Besides the systems’ teachers the materials have since been, disseminated to other teachers through the system teachers, Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development library, and Science Association Pakistan (SAP) platform. Even today the teachers find these support materials to be useful and affordable. For easy access of materials to a larger number of teachers, especially outside Karachi, the packages are made available on this website.

The textbook set referred to in the Teachers’ Guides is: Elementary Science Book, classes VI-VIII (1991): Sindh Textbook Board Jamshoro, Pakistan. Since then the textbooks have undergone some changes, hence, page numbers referred to have changed. The table after “Suggested Plan” in each guide is to help the users to make references to the corresponding pages in the currently used textbook: Elementary Science Textbooks classes VI-VIII (2001): Sindh Textbook Board Jamshoro, Pakistan.
